Masseter Botox

Botox for TMJ & Jaw Clenching

If you wake up with a tight jaw, catch yourself clenching through the workday, or your dentist keeps mentioning grinding, the masseter muscle is usually doing the work. Small, carefully placed doses of neurotoxin let that muscle relax while normal chewing carries on. This is an off-label use of Botox, and it starts with a health history and an assessment.

  • Placed by Tasha Wright Ford, RN, Master Injector, 22+ years in nursing and 16+ years injecting
  • Dosing set by muscle strength, decided at assessment
  • Chewing function is protected with conservative dosing

What It Helps

What Masseter Botox Can Address

clenching and grinding treated with botox for tmj & jaw clenching in Phoenix

Clenching and Grinding

When the masseter is overworked, it clenches through the day and grinds through the night. Relaxing part of that muscle lowers the force it can produce, which is the point of the treatment. Tasha palpates the muscle first and doses to its strength.

Causes+

Stress, concentration, and sleep-time grinding train the masseter into a habit it keeps even when you try to stop.

How Masseter Botox Settles

What to expect, step by step

Treatment Day

Day 1

A few small injection points in each masseter, the muscle at the angle of the jaw. You can eat normally. Most people feel nothing beyond the injections themselves today.

Clenching Eases

Weeks 1-2

The muscle weakens gradually rather than switching off. Most patients notice the morning tightness and the daytime clenching easing over the first two weeks, and the headaches that came with them often ease alongside.

Full Effect, Then Return

Weeks 4-6 to Months 3-4

The jaw reads softer at around four to six weeks as the muscle rests. Effect typically holds three to four months; with repeat treatment many patients find the interval stretches.

A Clench Is a Medical Complaint First

Why Patients Choose Us

A Clench Is a Medical Complaint First

Jaw tension, worn teeth and morning headaches are symptoms, and relaxing the masseter treats one part of that picture. We want to know what else is going on before we treat it.

Tasha owns GlamWright Medical Boutique and brings 22+ years in nursing and 16+ years injecting. A functional complaint gets a full health history first, which is the part of this work her nursing background carries.

Grinding damages teeth whether or not the muscle is relaxed. If you have not been assessed by a dentist, or a night guard has been recommended and not made, we will tell you to start there. This is not a replacement for either.

We see patients at 707 E Palo Verde Dr, Ste A, Phoenix, AZ 85014, in Uptown Phoenix. Call 602-469-8693 and we will find a time. Masseter treatment is assessed in person, because the muscle has to be felt while you clench.

FAQ

Botox for TMJ,
Answered

The questions we hear most about masseter treatment at our Uptown Phoenix boutique. Anything else is answered in a consultation.

It is a small series of neurotoxin injections placed into the masseter, the thick chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. Relaxing part of that muscle reduces the force behind clenching and grinding. The product is the same family used for frown lines. The placement and the purpose are different.

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Botox carries FDA approvals for other uses, and masseter treatment for clenching is a widely used off-label application. Off-label prescribing is a normal, legal part of medicine, and it is exactly why every plan here starts with a proper assessment.

It works on the muscle, not the joint. Relaxing the masseter reduces the force that loads the joint through every clench, and for many patients that is where the daily tension and soreness ease. Repair of the joint, the disc or your bite calls for a different kind of care, and we will say so and point you there.

Most patients see the effect hold for roughly three to four months, and the timeline varies with muscle strength and dose. With repeat treatments, some patients find the interval stretches as the muscle settles out of its clenching habit.

It can, gradually and usually in a direction patients ask for. A masseter built up by years of clenching adds width to the lower face, and as it rests, that width can soften. If you want the relief without the slimming, or the slimming is the whole point, that shapes how Tasha doses.

The goal is to take the top off the clenching force while leaving everyday chewing alone, and conservative dosing is how that is done. Some patients notice the jaw tires a little faster with very chewy food in the first weeks. That settles as the effect balances.

Chewing muscles respond more slowly than expression lines. The effect begins within the first week or two, and the full result is usually felt around four to six weeks, which is when the follow-up happens.

Tasha Wright Ford, RN, a Master Injector with 22+ years in nursing and 16+ years injecting, places every masseter treatment personally, after her own assessment. Dr. Anna Mkrtchyan, Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD), is the practice's Medical Director.
